Three Generations of Denim Manufacturing

I’m Faraz, the founder and maker behind FABEE DENIM.

FABEE didn’t begin with a mood board or a marketing strategy. It grew from a family history in Birmingham denim manufacturing stretching back three generations.

My family manufactured jeans and denim garments in Birmingham. When the factory closed in 1992, the machinery was dispersed and much of the specialist knowledge surrounding denim production began to disappear with it.

Making jeans requires a particular understanding of fabric, machinery and construction: knowing how to control heavy denim, sequence every operation correctly and build a garment capable of withstanding years of wear. Much of that knowledge is passed directly from one maker to another and refined through practical experience.

Years later, I began rebuilding that capability. I collected specialist jeans-making machinery, learned every stage of denim construction and manufactured garments for other British brands.

Eventually, I reached a point where I wanted to put that experience and family history into something of my own.

That became FABEE DENIM.

As more British clothing production moved overseas, I wanted FABEE to offer something increasingly difficult to find: jeans genuinely cut and constructed here in Birmingham.

Not simply designed in Britain, but made in my Birmingham workshop using specialist jeans-making machinery and traditional construction methods.

FABEE is proof that properly constructed jeans can still be made here.

One Maker. Every Pair.

At present, every pair of FABEE jeans is made by one person: me.

I develop the patterns, cut the denim, operate the specialist machines, construct the jeans, attach the hardware, inspect each pair and prepare them for dispatch from my Birmingham workshop.

Different stages require different machines and different skills, but every pair passes through my hands from the initial cloth to the finished garment.

That gives me direct control over the fit, construction and final standard. When a pair leaves the workshop, I know exactly what went into making it.

Properly Constructed Jeans

Excellent denim is only half the story. What also matters is how the jeans are cut, fitted and put together.

FABEE jeans are constructed using specialist machinery and details chosen for strength, function and character. Depending on the style, these include copper double-pronged buttons, copper nail rivets, chain-stitched hems, properly felled seams and fly guards cut to display the selvedge edge.

These operations require more time and skill, but they remain part of the standard I keep at FABEE.

The aim is not to reproduce an old pair of jeans for the sake of nostalgia. It is to use proven construction methods to make jeans that fit properly, wear comfortably and develop character over many years.

Why Japanese Selvedge Denim?

Selvedge denim is woven on traditional narrow shuttle looms. These machines weave more slowly than modern wide-width looms and produce a tightly bound, self-finished edge—the “self edge” from which the word selvedge originates.

Because the cloth is narrow, pattern pieces must be positioned carefully so the selvedge edge becomes part of the finished jeans. On FABEE jeans, it can be seen inside the outseam and on details such as the fly guard.

It is not simply decoration. It is a consequence of how the denim is woven and how the jeans are cut.

Japanese mills have spent decades preserving and refining this method of denim production. I select these fabrics for their depth of indigo, texture, strength and ability to develop character through wear.

A rigid pair begins dark and structured. As the denim softens, creases and fades, it records the way its owner moves and lives. No two pairs age in exactly the same way.

The selvedge edge alone does not guarantee exceptional denim. The yarn, dyeing, weight and weave all matter. I choose Japanese selvedge fabrics that combine excellent cloth with the character and ageing potential suited to the way FABEE jeans are constructed.

What This Means for You

When you buy a pair of FABEE jeans, you are buying something cut and constructed in Birmingham by a maker with a direct connection to three generations of denim manufacturing.

Every pair is made in my workshop with careful control over the fit, construction and final finish. It is a deliberate, small-scale approach built around quality rather than volume.

These are jeans designed to be worn for years, not seasons.

They begin as something I have made. Through wear, they gradually become yours.
